Mutare sungura artist and clergyman Hosiah Chipanga has emerged as a surprise entrant in the big dog race for the Dangamvura-Chikanga member of parliament ticket that already features the previous two legislators; Zanu PF’s Esau Mupfumi and Prosper Mutseyami of the newly formed Citizens Coalition for Change(CCC).
The Mapipi church founder successfully filed his nomination papers at Mutare Magistrate’s court and will contest at an independent candidate.
In 2013 and 2018, Chipanga contested in the presidential elections where he garnered less than 1% of the vote on both occasions.
Through his music, church ministry and social media platforms, Chipanga has been a vocal critic of the Zanu PF regime from the Robert Mugabe era to the second republic which is led by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
The Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency is the biggest in Mutare urban and has over 30 000 voters.
In the previous election, Mutseyami under the MDC Alliance banner toppled Mupfumi who had been at the helm for the past two elections.
