Zim artists are struggling: Freeman

CURRENTLY there are some music artists who are considered established and successful by many.

However only a handful can attribute their success to music.

These have found a way of linking their fame to lucrative advertisements and established relationships with political events.

The majority of the musicians, some of whom are actually famous, are struggling with the elements like many unless they have other occupations.

What tends to happen is that some have established fame and are household names but that the money, the material rewards, seldom follow. Why is that the case? Is it a worldwide phenomenon?

Recently Zimdancehall artist Slyvester “Freeman” Chizanga explained that most artists are actually suffering despite having made big names for themselves.

Freeman recently took to social media to congratulate fellow artist Dorothy Karengo affectionately known as Darula in the Zimdancehall circles on the purchase of her first car.

The award winning HKD boss explained how he kept money for Darula after being asked by touts to buy a car for the self-proclaimed Zimdancehall Queen.

He said he used to drop Darula at the Norton Rank after their musical events. And sometimes he would drop her home if it’s late.

After the post, a number of Freeman’s followers started asking why Darula doest own a car by now yet she is well known.

Freeman had to respond on the post.

He said: “I have been reading comments saying aaaaa anga asina mota, (she didn’t have a car?)

“You guys this is not America or South Africa where you can get endorsements or buy cars and houses after having a hit son here in Zimbabwe, their (artists) names are just bigger than the money they get.

“80% of Zimbabwe artists don’t have cars or houses. Just now, we don’t own houses.

“We don’t get enough money. That’s how it is. Ask any artist who you are close to and they will tell you that it’s tough. The path we walk on for one to be said to have a car or house.”
